Say No to No

July 30th, 2013 at 03:02 am

It's been awhile. Almost 2yrs. since I've posted...

I've spent so much time focusing on my finances I've forgotten how to live. One step forward, two steps back has been my motto for the past year or so. Just when I thought I was ahead, something happens and it's gone plus some. It's exhausting. As a result I have said "no" to many social gatherings, outings, new experiences because I couldn't afford it. I've put on 20+ pounds due to isolation.
The last straw happened this month. A car accident caused by a negligent driver (hit and run) that left me with a huge deductible to have my car fixed.

The good new is I'm saying no to no! I'm planning a huge surprise for a family member (a reunion of sorts) and couldn't be happier (even though I can't afford it). I'm buying tickets to an event that I have wanted to attend for the past few years (but couldn't afford it).

The bottom line is I'm not waiting until "I can afford it". That day will never come.

It's all about balance. Something I long forgot.

Well, hello again. Smile Sorry to hear about your social isolation. I think there are many in people in that situation, so, oddly, you are "not alone."

I don't understand what you mean by not waiting until you can afford it. Is the money already dedicated to something else that you simply will forgo? Or are you putting the purchases on credit, only to be dealt with later?

You are bringing up some important issues here.

I will put the purchases on my credit card and slowly pay it off. I am one of the many whose wages are not keeping up with inflation (food, gas and energy costs).

I am good with money and can pinch a penny until it squeals. There have been too many "unexpected" expenses over the past year or so.

I am very responsible and pay my bills first before anything else.

I surely know what you mean about wages not keeping up with inflation. Calculating inflation I found that at the end of our work years we were still making the same that we did at the beginning --except for paid extra classes in later years. Frown Ah, teaching. Anyway, yes, effectively decreasing (or merely stagnating) wages are real for many, many people.

I agree that life is too short and unpredictable to put things off. I have had to realize that time away as a family (vacations) are definitely worth it when we have a large and busy family. We've done the big vacations every two years, but might try to do it annually since the girls are getting older and will be college-bound soon enough.
