Trying to stop the money bleed.......

March 7th, 2011 at 01:21 am

The main sewer line clogged again. It has to be cleaned every 12-14 months. This time it was really, really bad. The tree roots were HUGE. I have never seen so many pulled at one time. The line was inspected with a camera and I wouldn't have believed it if I had not seen it for myself. Tree roots throughout the line. I've been told by three different plumbers, the old clay line needs to be replaced with the pvc line they use now. It's a substantial cost ($5,200). I'm trying to buy time to budget for it or sell the home. They recommended high pressure water jetting. The cost $525.

I'm trying to research the water jetting but haven't found much about it. They say it is the most effective method. Anyone tried it? If so, I'd be interested in your opinion.
Thanks!

    Oh no, that must suck!
I don't know what the water jetting is either.
    Good Luck! Smile

I don't either. A friend of mine had the same problem and as I remember the fix cost about $5,000. I'm so sorry; it's no fun to spend that much money on something like that.

Chances are if you do go to sell the house, you will have to disclose what you know about the sewer line and have to offer something toward it. So it may be in your best interest to shop around for a pipe replacement.

I googled the water jetting and came up with this:
Text is http://www.johnsewer.com/commercial.html and Link is

I / we had to do that in October. Cost me/us $2700 - - but have had no issues with the plumbing since.

It is amazing to learn about things like this that can lead to problems with plumbing... I didn't even know about tree roots in pipes! Not a cheap thing, either, it sounds like. I hope that you are able to get it managed, but it is true that you would have to disclose the problem if you sold. If not it could totally come back to bite you. People need some insurance that they are getting what is promised, and I imagine it could come up on inspection as well.

Tree roots in pipes is a huge problem in California.
Our drought/dry conditions cause the trees roots to branch out searching for water. It only takes a small crack for a root to enter. The problem doesn't seem so common in regions with more rainfall(based on conversations with others around the U.S.)

The procedure was done today. It was quicker than expected and hopefully will take care of the problem for at least a year. I should have become a plumber (LOL) because they make a killing!
