Why buy new when used will do?

February 17th, 2014 at 01:01 pm

I've been furniture shopping with a friend this weekend. We've been to Thrift stores and shopping Craigslist and found some amazing deals. A lot of the furniture is high end. Most people are moving and don't have room or they are moving long distance and the expense to transport is too high. It's also been fun, meeting different people and getting to know a little slice of their lives. Everyone has been super nice. A lot of people talk about craigslist nightmares but we've been fortunate. The rule is bring someone with you and visit during the day (mornings/early afternoons preferred).

So far, my friend purchased a lovely solid wood with iron accents dining room table and 4 chairs in excellent condition for $150.

Recycle/reuse.

Yes! From Craiglists, we've bought a 10 X 13 wool rug that, new, would have been 20X the price, two upholstered chairs in a hard-to find size that fits my older home, and an interesting Japanese woodblock print. I watched the list for weeks to find what I wanted, but they are so worth it.

I sell on craigslist and have enjoyed meeting the people, too. I have a dining table listed right now, but no bites yet.

If there is one thing I have done to avoid debt, is accept hand-me-downs and buy USED. Of course, Craigslist and the internet makes it so much easier to do so! Big Grin {I remember buying used appliances and so on from the newspaper. Even a car. Most other used goods we bought at stores or from friends, in the days before the internet}.

Never had one bad story or outcome. *shrugs* Be careful, of course. The internet does make it infinitely easier to SEE what you are getting and the condition things are in. Had to take more chances in the old days, but was usually someone just getting rid of some barely used item in mint condition, for a small fraction of the cost of new.

While weather is a big factor just now, I've seen remarkable bargains at yard/tag sales. My friend bought a nearly new LazyBoy brand recliner for $ 30. as most yard sale visitors don't have transport to move big items.

Most of my furniture comes from hand-me downs, thrift shops or Craigslist. Great way to save money! Smile
